England top Group D – and boss Gareth Southgate sees plenty of room for improvement

Gareth Southgate insisted there is more to come from England after their 1-0 win against Czech Republic meant they won Group D.

The former Crystal Palace defender named South Londoner Jadon Sancho on the bench. The Borussia Dortmund star came on with five minutes to play.

The winning goal came when Jack Grealish’s looping cross found Raheem Sterling, who nodded home from close range.

The Three Lions will face the runners up of Group F next Tuesday at Wembley.

Speaking to ITV, Southgate said: “We started really well, we were stable with the ball.

“The Czech Republic are a very good side, they use the ball very well and they’re difficult to break down.

“There’s definitely more to come from us. We haven’t scored from a set-piece yet, which is crucial in big matches. We have to get them nailed.

“We’re not as fluent as we’d like to be at the moment, but we have moments where we look a very good side.

“Any of [Germany, France or Portugal] are different types of tests. There’s a lot of good things that we’re doing. We’ve managed to get most of the squad into the games which is good.

“Harry Maguire got 90 minutes tonight, which is important. Jordan [Henderson] got 45, which was a real step forward. There were a lot of positives this evening.

“It will be great to have more supporters at Wembley next week. We wanted to win the group to stay at Wembley, and we’ll wait and see who we will play.”
