Former Crystal Palace forward joins Championship side after leaving League One outfit

Former Crystal Palace forward Connor Wickham has signed for Cardiff City on a free transfer until the end of the season.

Wickham, 29, started the season with League One side Forest Green Rovers, scoring nine goals in 20 appearances for Ian Burchnall’s side.

Cardiff – managed by ex-Forest boss Sabri Lamouch – sit just outside the drop zone in the Championship.

The former Sunderland and Preston striker made his debut for the Bluebirds on Tuesday evening, playing 17 minutes in the 2-0 win over Birmingham.

Wickham signed for Palace in 2015 under Alan Pardew and scored 11 goals in 50 appearances during his time at Selhurst Park.

His career has been hampered by knee injuries.

Speaking to Cardiff City TV, Wickham said: “It was a move I was excited about.

“It’s a big club and obviously we’re in a position where I can hopefully come in and make a difference. So it’s a good one.

“On a personal level it’s good to be back fit and playing and proving a few people wrong. Coming in here, if I can carry it on it will be great. Hopefully it can help lift the team and we can start getting back up the table.”
