‘I’m delighted for him’ – Exeter boss praises Joe Whitworth’s contribution as Crystal Palace loanee keeps clean sheet in Wigan draw

Exeter boss Gary Caldwell praised Crystal Palace loanee Joe Whitworth following their goalless draw at Wigan on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles youngster made six saves during the game and kept his fourth clean sheet in League One this season.

Whitworth, 20, is on his first senior loan spell away from Selhurst Park and has been an ever-present in the Exeter team.

Caldwell told Exeter’s YouTube channel: “He’s been brilliant for us in terms of personality and how we can build through him and use his quality with his feet.

“Goalkeepers are there to keep the ball out of the net. As Roy Keane would say: ‘He is just doing his job.’

“But it was a fantastic save. It was the only real big save – everything else was down his throat.

“When he was needed, he produced a big save. I’m delighted for him – he’s been brilliant since he came to the club.

“It’s another clean sheet. All credit to him, the players at the back and the whole team for the way we defended.”
