‘It was a crazy game’ – Palace striker Christian Benteke’s verdict on 3-3 thriller at Turf Moor
Christian Benteke described his feelings as “mixed” after Crystal Palace’s 3-3 draw at Burnley. The striker believed his side had enough to take all three points from Turf Moor.
Benteke opened the scoring in the eighth minute when he struck a left-footed shot from just inside the area through James Tarkowski’s legs and in off the post.
The Belgian doubled his tally to bring the Eagles level after Conor Gallagher used his composure to pluck the ball out of the air and set up the waiting forward.
Despite Marc Guehi scoring his first goal for the club in the 42nd minute to complete the first-half comeback, Maxwel Cornet volley emphatically past Vicente Guaita four minutes after half time to bring the game level and send the Eagles back to Selhurst Park with a point.
“It was a crazy game. It was a mixed feeling because we could have won this game. We have to take that point and just move on,” explained Benteke to PalaceTV.
After scoring his fourth goal of the season and his 10th in the Premier League away from home since last December, Benteke added: “I’m happy to help the team. I’m in good form – I’m playing the way that I want to play. I will keep pushing myself.
“It’s just the way that we are playing. With this manager, we are creating more chances, and as a forward, it’s always good to be there and score goals.”
The Eagles conceded their eighth and ninth goal from set-pieces this season, with Ben Mee and Chris Wood heading home from crosses into the box during the first half to cancel out Benteke’s first goal.
Speaking on how the Eagles can improve when defending dead-ball situations into their own box, Benteke said: “It’s not easy to come here and win football matches. That’s what we’re trying to work on because we are conceding a lot of goals.
“When you play against one of the best teams in terms of physicality and scoring from set-pieces, it’s not easy. But we knew that it was going to be a tough challenge for us. Now we have to look during this week and focus on Aston Villa.”
