James McArthur: Crystal Palace had to show resilience to pull off impressive win at Manchester City

James McArthur believed that Crystal Palace’s resilience was why they deserved their victory over current Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Eagles secured their second win of the season, ending a run of four straight draws, as they defeated Pep Guardiola’s side 2-0 with goals from Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher.

McArthur played the full 90 minutes and captained the side in place of Luka Milivojevic.

McArthur said: “It’s a great result for us. We made it tough for City, and we deserved the win for our resilience, sometimes our composure on the ball and being clinical in both boxes.

“We did our jobs well. When you get the goal early, it’s not something you want to hang on to as such where you stop playing and stop doing the things you were told to do before the game.

“We kept trying to be aggressive in the press, even if it was in their own half, and we were carrying out our game plan to a tee.

“We probably weren’t as dominant on the ball as we have been, but we knew in the changing room that a result was close. Thankfully it came today.”

McArthur has started in every Premier League game under French World Cup winner Patrick Vieira, completing 90 minutes in eight of the fixtures.

Asked how much he is enjoying life under the Eagles boss, McArthur said: “Throughout the season, it’s been very enjoyable to play in that midfield and play in a team that are on the front foot and trying to get after teams.

“We will dominate the ball a lot more than in other games, but it’s about learning from experiences.

“Especially, let’s say, last week about trying to win those matches, thankfully today we’ve done that, and it sets us up for a good week.”
