Lee Bowyer congratulates former side Leeds on winning the title – and offers to arrange a boozy lock-in for the United players ahead of Charlton’s relegation decider at Elland Road

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has congratulated his former side Leeds United for winning the Championship title – and says he’d like to see the United squad enjoy a lock-in at the pub between now and the Addicks’ crucial relegation decider at Elland Road on Wednesday evening.

The Addicks travel to West Yorkshire for the final round of fixtures in midweek with their Championship safety still up in the air after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic at The Valley.

The South Londoners would confirm survival with a win and could even stay up with a point or after defeat if other results go their way – but face a Leeds side who have won seven of their last nine at home and were confirmed as champions after Brentford and West Brom both dropped points this weekend.

“I might send a pub up there and just lock them in it!” joked Bowyer, who made 265 appearances for the Whites after leaving The Valley to join Leeds as a teenager in 1996.

“I’m really pleased for Leeds, they deserve it. They’re by far the best side in the league so hopefully they continue drinking from now until Wednesday evening, that’s what I’m hoping for!

“We have to go there and do the right things ourselves.”
