Lee Bowyer: Cutting Paul Smyth’s loan move to The Valley short is QPR’s call

Lee Bowyer says it is Queens Park Rangers’ decision to recall Paul Smyth from his loan spell at The Valley.

The South London Press revealed this week that the west Londoners are expected to cut short the Northern Irishman’s temporary move to SE7.

The 23-year-old has made 14 appearances for the Addicks in League One this term, scoring once – but hasn’t been involved in the last two matchday squads.

“Paul Smyth is QPR’s player,” explained Bowyer.

“We don’t have a term where we can send him back. QPR, if they call him back, they call him back. That’s their decision. But Paul Smyth has been excellent around the place.

“He’s missing out because we’ve got Ronnie (Schwartz), we’ve got Conor (Washington). We’ve got people that can play in his position. That’s football, that’s the way it works.”

Smyth’s departure will mean that Liverpool loanee Liam Millar will be the only recognised wide man on Charlton’s books.

When asked if he’d be hoping to replace Smyth in the transfer window, Bowyer added: “If we can find someone to improve our squad, no matter what position, then we’ll try and improve it.

“We’ve shown that already in this window. Every player that we’ve brought in has improved us. If we can pick up another player to improve our squad then we will try and do so.”
