Lee Bowyer delighted to see progress being made by Albie Morgan – despite late red card during win at Bristol Rovers

Charlton youngster Albie Morgan continues to impress in the role that boss Lee Bowyer has asked of him in the Addicks midfield – and he pleased his manager with his performance during the 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers despite being sent off late on.

The 20-year-old academy graduate was shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge five minutes from the end of the victory at the Memorial Ground but his industrious performance in the West Country gained plaudits.

The match marked Morgan’s 25thleague start for the club and Bowyer said he’s been delighted with the progress the Kent born midfielder has shown since his debut during a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury at The Valley in August 2018.

“He’s improving,” explained Bowyer.

“We can all see that. From the Albie that we had 18 months ago to the Albie you see out there now, he’s maturing into a good midfield player. He’s 20 years old. He’s learning the game.

“Today, of course he’s made a mistake. He’s gone in for a challenge there that he doesn’t really need to, or can’t afford to, because you’re going to get a yellow. If you’re already carrying one, then you can’t be going in for them sorts of challenges. You’ve just got to try and block it, you can’t go in with your foot raised.

“Was it a second yellow? Yes. But he’ll learn from that. He’s a good lad. He was very good up until the sending off.

“I think he’s improved this season and today he deserved to start. He’s a good player and he’s learning the game. I thought he was very good today. I have confidence in him or he wouldn’t have been starting.

“Before the [recent enforced Covid-related isolation] with Albie, he was fine. I have confidence in him. We’ve got players coming back Tuesday and Albie will miss out because of the red card. I have confidence in him otherwise he wouldn’t even be here travelling.”
