Lewisham’s Eddie Nketiah better equipped for England chance

Lewisham-born Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah says he is being called up to the England senior squad in a “good moment” in his career.

The former Leeds loanee has been named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the first time after scoring two goals in the Gunners’ first four Premier League outings.

Nketiah, 24, has been capped by England at U18, U19 and U20 level. He also captained and is the record goalscorer with the U21 side.

England play Ukraine in Wroclaw, Poland tomorrow in their Group C Euro 2024 qualifying clash before heading to Hampden Park on Tuesday to play Scotland in the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of the sides.

Nketiah said: “It’s a really proud moment for me, my family and my friends.

“It’s been quite the journey here, with lots of ups and downs.

“I am a much better player now than I was maybe two or three years ago.

“I feel confident and I feel ready to continue to improve. I am still young and humble enough to know I am not the finished article.”
