Lions set to extend versatile midfielder Ryan Leonard’s stay at The Den

Versatile midfielder Ryan Leonard is set to sign a new deal with Millwall.
The Lions are keen to tie him down to a longer-term deal – something the 29-year-old “would love” to sort.
“The talks have kind of started and it’s looking positive at the moment,” he said.
“If it suits both parties and we can do it then I would love to stay. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I’m very settled. I’ve enjoyed working with the gaffer and the coaching staff .”
Boss Gary Rowett said: “He’s a good quality player and a great character. We want to maintain continuity within this group with a great squad mentality.
“We want to give new deals to young players and extend contracts of others.”
Leonard joined in 2018 and has made over 80 appearances in SE16 despite a couple of sustained spells on the sidelines.
The midfielder hasn’t played since suffering an ankle injury in the 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in February.
Leonard’s versatility has proved invaluable for Millwall boss Gary Rowett after performing in several different positions last term, most notably on the right-hand side of a back three. The Lions man was introduced in that role during last weekend’s 3-0 friendly win over Ipswich Town.
“[Rowett] has said to me there’ll be times I’ll be playing at the back and I need to be aware of that.
“I enjoy playing in midfield, but the more games I’ve played at the back I’ve enjoyed it. It’s a position I’m more than comfortable in – I enjoy playing there.
“I played a few games there at Sheffield United as well, so I understood the role anyway.
“It’s a position I’m very capable in and can bring something a bit different to other people, so that can only be a good thing for me and the squad.”
