Millwall Lionesses crack Acorns to stay top of the London & South East Regional league

Jack Wheeler reckoned that Millwall Lionesses were dominant in the second half in their 2-0 win against AFC Acorns and fully deserved the three points.

The Lionesses made it six wins on the bounce to stay top of the London & South East Regional Women’s division.

It stayed level for the first half as Otesha Charles and Angel Reid had efforts saved by the hosts keeper.

But they broke the deadlock with 20 minutes remaining as substitute Lucy Jellett struck home from inside the area.

Jellett was making quite the impact from the bench and doubled The Lionesses lead minutes later as she got the decisive touch following pinball in Acorns box.

Wheeler said: “Towards the end of the second half, especially, there was only really one team in it and our fitness prevailed and that managed to get us out of a sticky situation.

“Acorns had a few opportunities in the first half but second half it was one-way traffic, really.

“It was a very professional performance from us. We struggled in the first half, we weren’t quite our normal selves, but we reset, refocused and managed to get the 2-0 win.

“That’s all that really matters at the end of the day, sometimes you can’t play well every single week but it’s just about making sure you get the three points.

“We knew if we kept knocking on the door enough that at some point we would get our chance and put it away and that’s exactly what Lucy did when she came on, got two goals.”

Jellett came off the bench to score both goals and win the game for the South London club.

He added: “She’s been biding her time, she’s been with us for a couple of weeks now, she works really hard for us both in and out of possession – so I’m really pleased with her work-rate.

“Then today, she found herself in the right pockets to get the deadlock broken and managed to get us the three points.

“It just shows the squad depth that we’ve got at the Lionesses, we can bring players on that can impact the game and managed to get us the three points which is all we want really to happen.”
