Milton Keynes 3-0 Charlton Athletic: Youthful Addicks side eliminated from EFL Cup

A youthful Charlton side were knocked out of the League Cup as League Two Milton Keynes ran out comfortable winners at Stadium MK.

Early goals from Dylan Asonganyi and Ryan Watson had the hosts in control, along with a second-half own-goal from Addicks stopper Dillon Phillips, decided the first ever League Cup meeting between the two sides.

Lee Bowyer had made nine changes from the side that beat Shrewsbury in League One on Saturday, with Ryan Blumberg and Ben Dempsey both making their first senior appearances for the club.

Addicks debutant Dempsey had dragged an effort wide from the edge of the area in the opening exchanges but the hosts soon took the lead.

Asonganyi latched onto a loose header back to Dillon Phillips from Jo Cummings and rifled past the Addicks stopper to edge the League Two outfit ahead.

They doubled their lead nine minutes later and once again Lee Bowyer’s side will have been disappointed with the manner of the goal. The Addicks had their pockets picked inside the Charlton half with Watson seizing possession before bending beyond Phillips from the edge of the area.

Dempsey’s volley was charged down as he took aim from the edge of the area as the young Addicks grew into the contest but the hosts were good value for their two-goal lead at the interval.

Callum Brittain struck an effort into the side-netting early on in the second-period for Paul Tisdale’s side, with Mark Marshall’s curler deflecting wide at the other end.

Lee Nicholls got down well on his left-hand side to touch Reeco Hackett-Fairchild’s drive around the post, before the visitors were then denied what looked a certain penalty as Nicky Ajose was hauled down inside the penalty area.

Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu, Alfie Doughty and Kenneth Yao all made their Addicks debuts from the bench with a quarter of the game left to go – but they were unable to stop their side falling further behind.

Brittain’s driven cross deflected off Phillips and into his own net, the Addicks stopper helpless as the South Londoners were eliminated from the EFL Cup.
