Nathan Jones explains why former Millwall defender has dropped out of Charlton starting line-up

Nathan Jones has explained why Alex Mitchell has dropped out of the Charlton Athletic starting line-up in recent weeks.

The defender joined the Addicks in the summer from Millwall and has started 25 League One outings this season.

But the former Lincoln loanee has been named on the bench in the last five fixtures and has only played one minute in those games.

“We have real competition in that area,” explained Jones.

“We want to be defensively sound. Alex has been excellent being defensively sound – our record has been really good.

“Then we want to be progressive in possession and that’s an evolution side to us. We want to evolve now and be better in possession.

“All these factors come into mind. The three that are playing are in very good form. Kayne has been excellent since coming back in.

“Lloyd has been one of our best performers all season. Macca has been really comfortable and given that balance.

“All three have got real good competition with what we have. We want them to embrace that competition and be at it.

“If your levels are good, you stay in.”
