Rowett expresses thanks to Millwall board for support during pandemic

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has paid tribute to the backing he has had from his chairman and board during the coronavirus crisis.

The Lions boss has expressed his gratitude that he has found himself at such a well-run and well-financed club, when others are struggling to make ends meet.

Rowett, pictured above, especially thanked chairman John Berylson and chief executive Steve Kavanagh for their efforts to keep the club running smoothly while others are struggling without gate receipts.

“This is a fabulous club with a really supportive owner who tries to think about other people rather than himself,” said Rowett. “John and Steve have been very positive – trying to find solutions to issues.

“This crisis has been hard to watch. But in these situations, you realise what a good organisation you work for.

“The staff and the players have stepped up. I know that is different to the way NHS staff have shown such courage, but the reaction of Millwall people has shown how people deal with bad times. It has solidified my opinion of this club.

“Everyone is just trying to get through this the best way they can. I am sure when we all come out of this, we will all appreciate much better what we have got.

“Amidst the tragedy of the loss of life and the sadness, we will appreciate more the things we took for granted.”

Rowett does not believe a wage cap being discussed by the EFL – to stop Championship clubs breaking the bank to win promotion – would be likely to hit Millwall. “Most of our players and staff would do whatever it takes to help the club and the community out,” he said.

“But I don’t think a wage cap would have a massive impact on us. I would imagine any cap would be well above what we pay. And that just highlights how well this club has been run for a number of years.”
