‘So underrated’ – England defender John Stones highlights Crystal Palace midfielder’s qualities

Manchester City defender John Stones has highlighted England team-mate Adam Wharton’s abaility to do the fundamentals of football.

The 20-year-old Crystal Palace midfielder was named in Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad after impressing in the penultimate warm-up game ahead of the tournament in Germany.

Wharton, who joined the Eagles in January and impressed in the second half of the Premier League campaign, is yet to feature in Germany for the former Palace captain.

“One thing I can say about Adam is that he does the basics incredibly well,” told BBC’s Football Daily Podcast.

“That is something so underrated in football.

“The basics of controlling with the correct foot or using the space well – little things like that.

“His ball retention and his calmness is incredible for such a young guy.

“Coming into a big squad on a big occasion is a credit to himself. It really is.”
