Tyrick Mitchell looking to take his game to next level – and be latest top Palace full-back to come through academy

Tyrick Mitchell hopes that he can be “next in line” when it comes to successful Crystal Palace full-backs.

The academy product has started every Premier League game this season under Patrick Vieira – only missing eight minutes of the campaign in the 3-0 defeat to Spurs on Boxing Day.

Mitchell, 22, made his 50th senior appearance for the first team in the 1-1 draw with struggling Norwich City on Wednesday evening.

He won a penalty for his side in the second half, but Wilfried Zaha was unable to convert the spot-kick.

Nathaniel Clyne and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have both come through the Eagles academy.

Wan-Bissaka was sold to Manchester United in the summer of 2019 for a deal reported to be worth around £45million.

Stockwell-born Clyne played 137 matches for Palace before being sold to Southampton in 2012. He had five years with Liverpool before re-signing for the South London club in October 2020.

When asked whether he is in good company in terms of former Crystal Palace academy graduate full-backs, Mitchell told BBC Radio 5Live: “If you look back down the years they have produced a lot of good full-backs, so hopefully I’m next in line.

“I’m more offensive this year, and I’m just trying to get more assists and more goal contributions for the team, so that’s how it’s changing.”
Mitchell produced two expertly-timed tackles on Teemu Pukki in the first half to deny Norwich extending their goal advantage.

“I was just glad that I could get back in time to stop them from scoring,” said Mitchell.

“It’s something that as a defender you’re trained to do – always try to be cool inside your own penalty area. I’m happy that I was able to do that.

“You can see every match that we’re dominating games. As a player and as a team, that is what you want to do – you don’t want to be on the back foot. It’s good how he [Patrick Vieira] is managing us and how we’re playing.”
