‘Very crucial’ – Romain Esse explains key decision behind Crystal Palace switch and Millwall exit
Romain Esse has spoken for the first time since completing a club-record £14.5m exit from Millwall to join South London rivals Crystal Palace.
The Lambeth-born winger was confirmed on Saturday morning, with Esse penning a five-and-a-half-year deal at Selhurst Park.
Esse, who made 66 appearances for the Lions after progressing through to their first teams, will be eligible to feature for Palace in their Premier League fixture next weekend against Brentford.
Eagles sporting director Dougie Freedman has developed a reputation for plucking the best young talent in the Championship – Adam Wharton, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze all standing out.
Olise, who plays in the same role as Esse, left in the summer to join Bayern Munich for £50million.
“I’m very much looking forward to it – I’m very excited,” he told PalaceTV.
“It’s a good project and opportunity – I can’t wait to get started.
“It’s been a long process but I’m just happy now it’s done.
“The club is going in a great direction.
“The next step in my development is very crucial. I thought this would be the best place. I can’t wait to start playing under the manager.
“This is the best place for opportunities and to really take my game to the next level to push on my career.
“I can’t wait to play in the Premier League and most importantly for Crystal Palace.”
