“What dreams are made of” – Charlton’s Chris Gunter reacts to Wales reaching last 16 at Euros

Charlton Athletic defender Chris Gunter says Wales qualifying for the last 16 of the European Championships are “what dreams are made of”.

The Addicks right-back made his 102nd appearance for his country in Sunday evening’s 1-0 defeat against Italy.

Wales finished second in Group A and will play the runners up in Group B in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Speaking to BBC Wales, Gunter said: “It’s a tough one initially when the final whistle goes because we’re disappointed [that we lost 1-0 to Italy]. But as soon as we realised we’ve done what we set out to achieve, instantly pride sets in.

“To be out there and playing against Italy in Rome in the final group game – and to be part of a team that’s got out of the group in a tournament – is what dreams are made of. I’ve had many dreams come true over my career and this was another one.

“It’s a time now to forget about the result and the game and to make sure that we enjoy it, because nights like these don’t come around often. It’s not to say that we’re just going to accept that we’ve done well and next week doesn’t matter, that will come Monday and Tuesday.”
