Trees felled across South London by gusts of up to 50mph

Hundreds of people are counting the cost of strong winds which have blown down trees and fences and caused thousands of pounds of damage.

Gales of up to 50 miles an hour have swept across South London uprooting many landmark trees which have been there for decades.

This one in St Lawrence Way, Myatts Field South, landed on a well-kept Vauxhall Astra, which the owner was left picking out their belongings from this morning.

It was the subject of a tree preservation order (TPO) so could not be pruned.

Neighbour Pauline Dale fears another tree which hangs over her home further along the same street might also suffer the same fate – potentially damaging her townhouse.

Widow Mrs Dale, who has lived there for 41 years, said: “If this one falls over like the other one, it will crash straight into my home. It must be possible to cut it back to stop my home being in danger.”
