Millwall 0 Derby County 1 – Lions’ winless run stretches to eight Championship matches

Millwall’s winless run has extended to eight matches as Jason Knight’s 69th-minute goal left Gary Rowett’s side with just one home Championship victory in the 2020-21 campaign.

The Lions’ defending for the clincher was poor. Martyn Waghorn was unmarked as he met Craig Forsyth’s cross and Bartosz Bialkowski could only parry the ball straight into the path of Knight, who stuck the rebound away.

The South Londoners have failed to score in five of their eight matches since a 2-0 win at Preston North End.

Once again though there were key moments which didn’t go their way. Jed Wallace did brilliantly to break through on goal but David Marshall got his right hand to the strike and only conceded a corner.

Ben Thompson also volleyed over first time from a Mahlon Romeo cross in a first period in which there were few decent opportunities.

Matt Smith could only head a Jed Wallace cross straight at Marshall in the 54th minute.

Lions manager Gary Rowett brought on Troy Parrottt and he cut in from the right to force Marshall into action, but the on-loan Tottenham man dropped deeper and deeper to try and get on the ball – and an off-key afternoon was summed up when he put a pass to Shaun Hutchinson into touch despite being under no pressure.

Romeo produced a rising drive which went comfortably over the bar in the closing stages.

The Millwall supporters who were back in the stadium – limited to 2,000 – got increasingly frustrated as the contest continued.

Derby closed out the final stages of the match without any further scares as interim boss Wayne Rooney collected his first three-point haul. It was the visitors’ first win since October 3.
