Jonny Williams delighted to be a game-changer for Charlton – and praises fellow impact sub Chuks Aneke
Jonny Williams felt he fully did his job in Saturday’s 5-2 win over AFC Wimbledon – and hailed fellow impact sub Chuks Aneke.
Charlton were trailing 2-1 when the duo were brought on in the 53rd minute at The Valley.
Jake Forster-Caskey levelled after Connal Trueman could only parry an Aneke shot. Then Williams scored his first-ever home goal as he converted Chris Gunter’s cross.
Aneke drove home in the 85th-minute. It was his sixth goal of the campaign – all coming off the bench. Ben Purrington then prodded in from close-range after Williams’ shot came off the right upright.
Williams told Valley Pass: “I’m delighted. I always give my all in the shirt and finally I got my home goal in front of the fans. It’s a shame they couldn’t all be here. It’s a great win and I’m delighted.
“Every time I come on he [Lee Bowyer] wants me to impact a game and today I did that and I was involved in the other two goals. I couldn’t have done much more today.
“Chuks is such a presence. When he’s believing in himself and he brings the other side to the game, he’s a top, top footballer. If he can stay fit he’ll go a long, long way in the game. He’s a pleasure to play alongside. I know I’m going to get the ball when it comes up to him, because it just sticks.”
The Addicks are fifth in the table, only two points behind second-placed Lincoln City.
Asked how important it was to end a run of one victory in five matches going into the weekend, Williams replied: “Massive. You’re looking around at our our team and our bench – our squad is strong for this league. We should be looking to win every game. The gaffer will be looking for us to go on a run now.”

A much needed morale boosting win. Just hope the second half performance can be replicated for the whole game on Tuesday against a revitalised Bristol Rovers. It is so tight at the top and is going to take a good run to reach the dizzy heights of 1st or 2nd. Aftere last week, I am so pleased for Jonny Williams and also for Chucks. It is a shame that either do not seem to be capable to be ab effective influence on the game from the start. However, if they are only a pair of ‘super subs’, I will gladly take that if they keep do what they did yesterday. Well done Charlton !
