“I didn’t want to go back to Holland” – Maikel Kieftenbeld on making Millwall move

Maikel Kieftenbeld has spoken of his delight at signing for Millwall – spelling out that he didn’t want his Championship career to end.

The Lions signed the combative Birmingham City midfielder on a free transfer.

Kieftenbeld has penned an 18-month deal with Millwall. He hooks back up with Gary Rowett, who brought him to England when he was Blues boss.

“It’s a new adventure for me,” the Dutchman told the club’s official website. “I’ve been at Birmingham for five-and-a-half years.

“I spent five years at a club in Holland, so I’m not moving around a lot. It’s a big step for me. I’m really happy I could stay in England. I like the Championship. I didn’t want to go back to Holland.

“Then this opportunity came up with a manager I know. It worked out really well. It helps when you know how a manager works. I know what he is about and I really like that.

“I’m a team player. I give everything to win the match. Hopefully I can give some energy to the team.

“I’m fit, the last couple of weeks I was playing for Birmingham – two 90 minutes last week. I’m ready to go.”
