Millwall boss on transfer deadline day – and whether they were close to any late activity

BY DANIEL MARSH
Gary Rowett has revealed that Millwall weren’t really close to any other business on deadline day.
The Lions concluded two incoming transactions in January, bringing in midfielders Maikel Kieftenbeld and George Evans on permanent deals from Birmingham and Derby respectively. Kenneth Zohore’s loan was also extended until the end of the season.
Troy Parrott saw his season-long loan cut short before being sent to Ipswich, which left some wondering if Millwall would look into further attacking reinforcements.
Rowett opened up on the lack of activity on deadline day – and has backed Zohore to start hitting the back of the net after spurning another good chance against Norwich.

“We had a couple of moments on deadline day where a couple of things opened up. But I think you saw that not many teams did that much business. We needed some things to drop to free up some moves.

“I don’t think having attacking players is necessarily our issue – it’s about stepping up and taking chances. Don’t forget we’ve kept Ken Zohore here until the end of the season in this transfer window, which is a huge plus for us.
“Ken is a top-quality striker, and once again he gets that one good chance with the header. If you add them to his two chances against Cardiff, he will score. They will start dropping for him.
“I think that’s been the hard thing for us – we’ve got into some great positions, we’ve had opportunities, but we’ve not quite managed to take those opportunities. At a club like Millwall, I don’t think we’re ever going to be in a position just go and buy a guarantee of goals. That’s just where we’re at. We’ve got to work for hard for people to go and play above their performance levels and go and score.”
