Charlton Athletic boss Adkins on lack of game time for striker Ronnie Schwartz

Nigel Adkins is keen to play his part in Ronnie Schwartz commanding more minutes at Charlton Athletic.

The Danish striker, 31, was snapped up from Midtjylland in the January transfer window but has not even been on the bench for six of the last eight League One matches.

Schwartz’s only action since Adkins took charge was as a 79th-minute substitute in the 2-2 draw at AFC Wimbledon.

“I’ve had several real good conversations with Ronnie,” Adkins told the South London Press.

“First of all, he is a really good character. I said to him that I am here to help him.

“He has got another couple of years on his contract, so from my point of view it is about bringing the attributes he has got to be able to fit into the dynamic of the team we’ve got.”

Schwartz failed to convert a stoppage time penalty in the 0-0 draw at Oxford and his one goal for the Addicks came in his second appearance – the 4-4 against Rochdale.

The last of his three starts was in early February.

Adkins said: “With Ronnie you look at four  strikers with Jayden [Stockley], Conor [Washington] and Chuks [Aneke], four different types. How can we involve them in there? At the moment I’ve normally gone with the one target centre-forward. Saturday was the first time I could really start with two,  Conor going up there.

“Chuks has been very, very influential and productive coming off the bench – but again is a player coming back from injury.

“Jayden has been immense for us as a centre-forward but it’s been great we’ve been able to have Conor involved for a little bit. It’s a shame because he has been injured.

“I’d love to be able to turn around and say these guys are all able to go and play 90 minutes of football but hopefully next season we’ll be in a much better position to do that.

“At the moment we’re just trying to find a way to get the guys on the pitch and contribute.”
