Millwall boss Gary Rowett questions advice given to young striker Abdul Abdulmalik

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has questioned the career advice given to Abdul Abdulmalik.

The 18-year-old striker had been trialling with Portsmouth after his deal with the Lions expired but he moved on from the League One club last week.

Abdulmalik is now training with Premier League new boys Watford. The Lions had offered him new terms and are still due a six-figure compensation fee if he joins another club.

Rowett has previously sat down with the forward to outline their plans for him if he did commit to a contract.

“Other people at the club also expressed the same desire to keep him here on a longer contract,” said the Lions chief. “In my opinion he has been given not particularly brilliant advice – which is that you essentially need to try and leave the club.

“Someone would have to pay compensation rights if they were signing him.

“I’m not too sure where he goes from here. The problem nowadays is that you get a lot of people in young players’ ears giving advice when they probably haven’t played the game or been in that position. That advice is not always in the player’s best interests.”
