Wycombe boss Ainsworth mulls over tactical approach for Charlton Athletic match
Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth is confident he will have a stronger squad to choose from for this weekend’s home game against Charlton Athletic.
The Chairboys are ninth in the early League One standings and drew 0-0 at Oxford United at the weekend.
Wycombe have a 100 per cent home record in the league this season, defeating Accrington and Lincoln City.
“We’ve got a couple of players coming back from injury,” said Ainsworth. “We’re going to have a real strong squad. Dominic Gape will be involved at some stage.”
Ainsworth claims he has more than one tactical approach to mull over.
“Today [at Oxford] was soak it up and try and counter a little bit, like we used to be. That was the right way to go today.
“A clean sheet…it has paid off. We just didn’t make it count with that final pass. I watched the Birmingham-Derby game – Derby had 67 per cent possession and Birmingham beat them 2-0. We almost tried to model ourselves a little bit on that, let them have possession and quick counter-attacks. It almost worked.
“When we’ve got three at the back we seem to play some real good, flowing football going forward – we get the wing-backs involved. I’ve got plenty to think about, which way we’re going to play next weekend.
“The boys are up for anything. If it goes wrong it is my fault, because I’m asking them to do something specific.
“Charlton is another great club to come to Adams Park. They were an established Premier League club.”
