Johnnie Jackson’s reaction to Deji Elerewe signing long-term contract at Charlton

Johnnie Jackson has expressed his delight at Deji Elerewe signing a long-term professional contract at Charlton Athletic.

The Croydon-raised 18-year-old centre-back, who has made five senior appearances this season, has committed his future until the summer of 2024.

“We’re really pleased with his progress and we want to make sure he takes the right steps at the right time,” said Addicks caretaker boss Jackson. “He is a great size, strong for his age and aggressive. He’s not afraid to leave a little bit on one of the seniors if he needs to, to stop them going past him.

“He is comfortable on the ball and he can find the pass. We can work on that as his body develops, and he progresses, to make him even more comfortable in those situations.

“First and foremost he is a defender that loves to defend, which is a bonus, because they don’t always [want to do that].”
