Women’s football: Charlton fifth in table after 2-0 loss to Sunderland

Neve Herron scored twice as Sunderland grabbed their first FA Women’s Championship win since Halloween with a 2-0 victory against Charlton.

Herron broke the deadlock just before the hour mark with a low finish before making sure of the points in stoppage time from the penalty spot.

Sunderland had drawn two and lost six since their last league win, also against Charlton, in October.

It’s another damaging defeat for the Londoners, who were hoping to climb as high as third in the table but are now fifth.

Sunderland started brightly and almost scored in the fourth minute, Grace McCatty striking the bar with a volley.

Charlton went close through Katie Robinson, who forced Claudia Moan into a low save.

Despite further chances for both teams, it was goalless at the break, but Sunderland got the opening in the 59th minute as Herron slotted home from close range following a corner.

Moan made a couple of crucial saves to preserve Sunderland’s lead before Herron’s penalty sealed it after a foul on Holly Manders.
