Wigan boss labels his side ‘fantastic’ after vital Championship win over Millwall

Wigan manager Shaun Maloney described his side as “fantastic” in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Millwall.

Back-to-back victories for the Latics have at least staved off Championship relegation.

And goals from Will Keane and Thelo Aasgaard dealt a fresh blow to the Lions’ play-off prospects.

Maloney said: “I’m extremely proud. It was a fantastic performance and the result matched it. The big thing this week was to really make it uncomfortable as we could for Millwall and we did that. At the right times we showed the quality we needed.

“I’m very happy – but we’re going to have to go again.

“After the Blackpool game (a 1-0 defeat on April 15) it was very emotional and a big blow. The big credit has to go to the players. There were things we did well against Blackpool but also big things that we didn’t. All the credit has to go to the players. What they have shown in the last two games is that they do have quality – we’ve got big quality in the final third and how we defend.

“The biggest thing in the last two games is that when we’ve had to fight, to a man they have done that. The last two games we have won that fight.

“We minimised the chances that Millwall had. They had a really dangerous cross, just after their goal. But if we are as good as we were today, out of possession, and then we show the quality we did, and are even more clinical in the final third, we’ve got a chance (of staying up).”
