Sunny Edwards’ promoter confident that flyweight unification match-up can quickly be agreed
Eddie Hearn is confident that he can secure Sunny ‘Showtime’ Edwards a flyweight unification clash with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez within the next fortnight.
Crystal Palace-raised Edwards, 27, retained his IBF world title last night with a unanimous points decision over Andres Campos.
Edwards won 117-111 on all three judges’ scorecards.
He is now 20-0 as a professional.
Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn recently signed Edwards to his promotional stable with this weekend’s outing his first bout since putting pen to paper.
Texan Rodgriguez won the WBC super-flyweight belt but then dropped down a weight class to claim the vacant WBO strap against Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez in April.
“I want the big fights,” said Edwards. “You will never get the best out of me in a fight like that (against Campos).
“Do I think I was levels above? One hundred per cent. I probably had one eye on what’s next.

“I hurt him a couple of times but he didn’t give me the opportunity, he didn’t keep chasing.”
Hearn said: “He will fight everybody and he needs to. It was a good performance but one that might make the other champions a little more keen to fight him.
“I did have him losing a few rounds but you won’t see him switch off against big opponents. Jesse Rodriguez against Sunny is a fantastic fight. I think the fight that will get done in the next two weeks is Rodriguez, Sunny has his doubts.
“But something he said earlier this week was spot on – if you can’t get another champion then he must move up or down, to do something different, because that is his fourt or fifth defence. He has to fight and defend his title, but he has to chase legacy.”
