Caroline Dubois wants to face WBC world champion Mayer by early 2023

Caroline Dubois is targeting a fight against WBC world lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer.

The Greenwich 22-year-old, who represented GB at the last Olympics, looks a cert for major honours and is 6-0 since entering the paid ranks in February 2022.

Dubois has won all but one of her bouts by stoppage and faces Yanina del Carmen Lescano (13-2) at York Hall tomorrow night.

“I’ve been vocal that I want to move quick,” Dubois told Sky Sports. “I’ve been vocal in calling for Mikaela Mayer, early next year or this year. I don’t need fights that will be easy blowouts. I need progression fights and this is what I’m asking for.”

American Mayer, 32, won the WBC interim title after a unanimous decision over Lucy Wildheart at Copper Box Arena in April.

She previously held the IBF and WBO belts but lost them in a unification against WBC champion Alycia Baumgardner in October 2022.

“I think she (Dubois) is a great prospect,” Mayer told Sky Sports. “Really strong and talented. Even if I’m on her hitlist, I think that’s cool, because we’re seeing two generations of women’s boxing that could come together and potentially face each other, it shows the depth in women’s boxing now and how far we’ve come.

“You have got to be prepared to take risks and leave it all on the line, it shows the kind of fighter she is – calling me out.

“I plan on being the 135lb champion at the end of this year and I’m going to need some opposition and opponents to go up against. She’s working her way up, so we could cross timelines.”
