Millwall 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0 – Smith header seals win but Lions show superb defensive steel after Wallace dismissal
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Millwall are up to fifth in the Championship table after a superb defensive display earned them a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The Lions played more than 50 minutes down to 10 men after Jed Wallace was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Kieran Lee.
By that stage the hosts were already ahead. Matt Smith headed in from Connor Mahoney’s corner in the 37th minute – his second goal since arriving from QPR this summer.
It became about a test of Millwall’s resilience after the break with Alex Pearce, Jake Cooper and Mahlon Romeo the standout performers.
Bartosz Bialkowski was there when needed to make saves although quite a few of the Wednesday attempts were straight at him.
And the 10 men nearly managed to add to their lead in the 57th minute – Kieren Westwood acrobatically tipping over a thunderous strike by Aiden O’Brien.
