Charlie Edwards is still WBC world flyweight champion – as Martinez pays heavy price for late punch

Charlie Edwards retained his WBC world flyweight title – as his defence against Julio Cesar Martinez was dramatically ruled a no contest.
The Croydon fighter was knocked down in the third round but the challenger clearly landed a late and powerful left hook to the champion’s body.
Edwards failed to beat the count and initially Martinez was announced as the victor. Replays played on the big screens in the arena and a crescendo of boos and jeers rained down on the ring.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, in attendance at Greenwich’s 02 Arena, announced it was a no contest and that a rematch will take place.
It looked a lucky break for Edwards, who seemed unable to withstand the power of Martinez. The Mexican looked likely to go on and record an early win but instead his eagerness to land a shot on a fallen fighter cost him dearly.
What can I say, I’m gutted the way the fight ended. Very hard night in the office and it’s the last way I would of wanted to keep my title. Martinez is a tough, strong world class opponent. Big thank you to everyone for the support it means the world ❤️
