Swansea 0 Millwall 1 – Jed Wallace free-kick goal earns Lions first away win of the season

BY GRAHAM THOMAS

Gary Rowett was full of praise for his players’ attitude as Millwall finally won away from home for the first time this season.

A superb curling free-kick by Jed Wallace in the 63rd minute gave the Lions a deserved victory at the Liberty Stadium as their revival under Rowett continued.

This was the manager’s third victory in four games in charge and he said: “It was a really nice way to end the run of games [without an away win]. The players were conscious of it and needed to do something about it.

“We pressed Swansea in the right areas, we made it hard for them to play through us.

“We created the best chances of the match and we were relatively comfortable in terms of Swansea’s chances.”

Wallace had already dominated the game before he was pulled down on the edge of the box and jumped up to fire the free-kick over the defensive wall and in from 20 yards.

The Lions might even have made it 2-0 late on but were denied what appeared a clear penalty when substitute Jiri Skalak was held back by Swansea defender George Byers.

Rowett added: “Jed’s an infectious character, he wants to work, he wants to play and he wants to go and train, that’s how he is.

“He’s always asking for little bits of detail from the staff on how he can get better. Since coming into the club we’ve looked for players with those Millwall characteristics of hard work, energy and desire like he gave here, with that added bit of quality.”
