Charlton Athletic seal loan signing of Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Charlton Athletic have made Aiden McGeady their second signing of the January transfer window.

The Addicks agreed a loan deal for the Sunderland attacker, who turns 34 at the start of April, on Thursday and he travelled down to complete his switch.

McGeady’s contract at the Stadium of Light runs until the summer.

He has made 15 starts and been subbed on once in Sunderland’s first 30 games of the League One season but has not featured since the end of November, not making Phil Parkinson’s matchday 18 for the last nine league fixtures.

McGeady lists Celtic, Spartak Moscow, Everton, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston as former clubs.

He joined the Black Cats in July 2017 from Everton and has made 98 appearances – scoring 27 goals and providing 13 assists.

Parkinson told EFL Matters Podcast: “With Aiden, I just wanted to give him and his agent plenty of time to find a move in the January window.

“I think there will be people looking to take Aiden before the window closes, and then he’s got to then pick the right challenge that suits him as well.”

It had been reported that McGeady was training with Sunderland’s U23 squad.
