Charlton boss admits they missed out on Arsenal striker

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has admitted that Tyreece John-Jules was one of the players they missed out on due to their transfer embargo – with the Arsenal youngster netting against the South Londoners on Saturday.

The 19-year-old striker, born in Westminster, beat Ben Purrington too easily inside the area and his deflected strike beat Ben Amos to make it 3-0 to Doncaster Rovers.

Conor Washington (pictured below) did manage a consolation for the Addicks, who have been under a transfer embargo since the start of January.

Those restrictions were hardened in April and the League One side are now forced to operate a one-in-one-out policy – and can only pay £1,300 a week in wages.

Bowyer, asked about John-Jules, said: “He was the one we thought we would’ve got but we were under the embargo.

“In the end he has gone to Doncaster – but you can see why we wanted him.

“He’s only a young kid but he is strong, physical and on the shoulder. He can finish. He’s got a bit of everything.

“Unfortunately for us we couldn’t get him and Doncaster could.

“They’ll be in and around the play-offs. And this is what I’m talking about – this is the gap we’ve got to close. They’ve made a couple of additions and they are strong. You don’t lose 3-1 if you’re the better side.

“It frustrates and drives me crazy that we still create a load of chances and we don’t take them.

“I just said to the players: ‘That game should have been 4-4’. But we didn’t defend well and didn’t take our chances again.”
