Gary Rowett: Millwall deserve more credit for some of our play – the goal against Brentford was slick play

Gary Rowett reckons Millwall don’t get enough credit for some of the football they play – citing their goal against Brentford today as a perfect example.

The Lions drew 1-1 with the west London club at The Den.

And they went ahead with four minutes on the clock. Mason Bennett proved impossible for Pontus Jansson to subdue and his cross was headed neatly past Luke Daniels.

Referee David Coote awarded the Bees a penalty which was converted by Ivan Toney, who had gone down under contact from Shaun Hutchinson.

Rowett said: “It was a really good game of Championship football. They are one of the favourites to finish in the top two but we more than matched them today. At times we probably had the better, more clearcut chances.

“It was a great start from us and a really well-worked goal. It was really good football – we don’t get the credit for that side of our game.

“I’m a little disappointed but I can understand why the penalty was given. Hutch gets the wrong side of Toney but it’s a hand on the back – I thought it was a little bit soft. We had one later on – Norgaard wrestles Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to the ground and it’s three times as bad and nothing is given. It’s the inconsistency you struggle with.

“We reacted really well to go in level and played with a lot more composure – we played around the Brentford press and when we pressed we did it really, really well at times. It’s hard to do it all the times because then gaps start to appear – they are excellent at exploiting those.

“We had our chances and the Bradders one was a really good opportunity. It was well-worked and you’re hoping he finds the bottom corner and wins the game.”
