Driver was overheard saying “I think I blacked out” Croydon tram inquest hears

The driver of a tram that overturned at Sandilands Junction killing seven people was heard saying “look what I’ve done, I’ve killed them” by a police officer as he climbed out of the wreckage, an inquest has heard. At an inquest into the deaths on November 9, 2016, Scott Matthewson, a lawyer for the coroner, questioned Gary Richardson, detective superintendent for British Transport Police.

Number of passengers on the tube at 40 per cent of pre-pandemic levels

Passenger numbers on TfL services are not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels until at least March next year, according to the head of the network. Speaking at a meeting of the London Assembly this morning, TfL commissioner Andy Byford told members that “we are seeing a return” to normal levels of ridership on TfL services, with passenger numbers on the Tube currently at around 40 per cent of pre-pandemic levels and buses at around 60 to 65 per cent.

I, along with 40 other Members of Parliament, am calling for a public apology for, and a public inquiry into, the forced adoptions that took hundreds of thousands of babies from their teenage unmarried mothers in the UK of the 1960s and 1970s. I remember that era well, being a teenager myself at the time, living with the constant terror of pregnancy in those days before the contraceptive pill. We need a public inquiry because this is what I believe it will find.

New Mayor of Merton dedicates year in office to supporting the work of carers

A new Mayor has dedicated his year in office to supporting and celebrating the work of carers. The Figge’s Marsh Cllr Michael Brunt was elected as the new Mayor of Merton for the year 2021/22 at a meeting on April 21. The meeting was held a month earlier than usual so it could be held virtually. Cllr Brunt began his duties on May 19, taking over the role from Lower Morden Cllr Sally Kenny.
