Shops fined for fly-tipping their waste into the street

A food shop has been carpeted and fined after one of its staff threw rubbish into a passing refuse lorry.

ZA Afro Foods in Rye Lane, Peckham, became the seventh business targeted by quick stings by Southwark’s anti-fly-tipping team.

One of ZA’s staff was seen illegally throwing boxes into the lorry, which is reserved for residents and has a hydraulic crusher.

The business received fines of £1,000, costs of £1,078 and a victim surcharge of £100, at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court, on January15.

The team reaches 95 percent of reported instances within 24 hours – it issued 226 fines to businesses and individuals for fly tipping, from April last year. And seven other companies were fined a total of more than £4,000 through  prosecutions last year.

Three black bags were found outside the fried chicken shop, Morleys, at 10 Peckham High Street. The bags contained rubbish from the business.

The company admitted to the crime and was fined £770, with costs of £878, at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court, on July 10.

Thirty Two black bags were discovered outside a chicken and pizza takeaway, Chicks Peri Peri Chicken & Pizza, at 5 Camberwell Church Street. Three of the bags contained controlled waste, which directly linked to the business, received a conditional discharge, costs of £390 and a victim surcharge of £20, at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court, on July 10.

Four black bags and six cardboard boxes were found abandoned on the public highway outside Korean restaurant, Cheemc’-Yuni Ltd, of 310 Walworth Road.

All the bags contained restaurant waste, along with receipts and letters associated with this premises.

The company was fined £2,000, with costs of £300, at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court, on August 20. Three black bags were found abandoned on the street outside Indian restaurant, Tandoori Nights, at 73 Lordship Lane. The bags contained Indian restaurant waste: food waste and receipts from the business. The company was fined £700 with costs of £623.20 and a victim surcharge of £70, at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court, on October 25.

BTEX Services, a small delivery and removal company based in Somerset Gardens, N17, was caught on camera dumping rubbish in Walworth Place. This resulted in a six month conditional discharge, with £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge, at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on October 22.

A statement from Southwark council said: “Eyesores, such as illegal rubbish, detract from Southwark’s neighbourhoods and streets. Fly-tipping impacts on the council’s and the community’s investment in highlighting the history and character in local neighbourhoods and on open spaces across the borough.

Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment, said: “Dumping rubbish is illegal, antisocial and disrespectful to the people who live, work and visit here.

“Let this be a lesson to anyone considering fly-tipping in South London.”
