‘A bit gutted initially’ – Charlton caretaker boss was convinced they would land his beloved Arsenal in FA Cup third round

Charlton Athletic caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson has admitted he was “a bit gutted initially” not to land Arsenal in the FA Cup third round draw – with that tie still in play with only four balls left in the draw.

The Addicks came out next, sealing a home match in the competition, and were paired with Premier League Norwich City.

Arsenal ended up heading to Nottingham Forest. The North Londoners were the final club to be drawn.

Gunners fans Jackson told the South London Press: “If you just said that we were facing Norwich then it is a good draw – a Premier League team at home, it’s a great test for us.

“But I’ll be honest, I’m watching the draw and Arsenal are still in there with four balls left. I’m thinking ‘we’re going to get Arsenal’. For me that would have been unbelievable and for the lads, club and supporters. For me it would almost be like a dream come true.

“I was a bit gutted initially because there were four balls left and we’re one of them and so are Arsenal – I’d convinced myself we were going to get them. But, after the dust settles, it is a great draw. It’s a good chance for us to pit our wits against a great team.”
