Alfie Doughty: First Charlton Athletic goal was a special moment

Alfie Doughty has described his first goal for Charlton Athletic as “very special”.

The 20-year-old had been on loan at National League side Bromley until an injury crisis at the Addicks saw him recalled to SE7.

Doughty has started the last five Championship matches and scored a late winner for the South London club in their 3-2 win on Boxing Day against Bristol City.

He met Macauley Bonne’s low cross at the back post – forcing the ball home at the second attempt as Dan Bentley could only block his initial effort.

“It’s very special [to score his first goal],” Doughty told Valley Pass. “I’ll take it – a little tap in at the back post. I’m buzzing.

“As soon as I saw the keeper had not picked it up I just thought ‘I need to get there’. I sprinted quickly and managed to get there in the end. It fell to me and luckily I was there.

“I’m grateful to have this opportunity and I’m just trying to take it with both hands, to do the best I can. Today just topped it off with a win after a tough week. To finish with a win on Boxing Day, you can’t really beat it.”

Charlton are back in action at Derby on Monday evening.

“Today [Boxing Day] is not forgotten but we’ve got to move on to another game in four days time,” said Doughty. “We’ve got to focus and be ready for another tough game. If we show the same mentality as today then I think we’ll come away with three points.”
