Andy Marshall makes decision to quit as Millwall goalkeeping coach
Andy Marshall has stepped down as Millwall’s goalkeeping coach – adding that the passing of Matija Sarkic last summer “completely changed my perspective on life”.
The 50-year-old, who also played for the Lions in the 2004 FA Cup final, had been in the position since July 2022.
Marshall had a special bond with Sarkic, who died suddenly in June. He told our paper at the time: “It’s literally like losing my son. We had a very special relationship. Every single day we would either be training together, texting or talking – his personality would shine through.
“It wasn’t just a mentoring or coaching thing. It was a mentoring thing of life, rather than just of football.”
Marshall, speaking about his decision to leave the Lions, said: “I have loved every minute of my time here, both as a player and as a coach, and I truly feel now is the right time for me to take a break.
“Events over the last year have completely changed my perspective on life and now is the moment to focus and prioritise those closest to me and to enjoy my time with them.
“I would like to thank all the managers, staff and players I have worked with since my return for their unwavering support. For the upcoming season, I wish the lads nothing but success.
“Thank you to our fantastic chairman, who has been incredible throughout and so supportive. Finally, a thank you to the fans for everything you have done for me in both spells at the club. My family and I will continue to support Millwall from the sidelines.
“Once a Lion, always a Lion.”
