Buddy McGirt: No controversy over Dillian Whyte’s points win over Jermaine Franklin

Dillian Whyte’s trainer reckons there was nothing controversial about his fighter’s points win over Jermaine Franklin at the end of last month.

Brixton heavyweight Whyte won a majority decision over the previously unbeaten American at OVO Arena Wembley.

The South Londoner, 34, could rematch Anthony Joshua next year.

Whyte’s bout against Franklin was his first with Buddy McGirt heading up his corner.

One judge marked it 115-115 with the other two making Whyte the winner by 116-112.

“Without a doubt he did enough to get it [the decision],” New Yorker McGirt, who also trains British light-heavyweight duo Callum Smith and Dan Azeez, told iFL TV.

“A lot of people wanted him to go in there and make it a war and my job was to get him to do what we worked on in the gym.

“We had the right guy in front of us to try it. Now we put that with the rest of his arsenal.

“I saw what I needed to see. He listened to me and kept his composure. There were times he wanted to go out there and go bananas.

“There was no need for that. He was controlling the guy with his jab, let’s stick with that working.”
