Charlton 2 Northampton 1 – Washington double as Addicks finally record Valley victory

Conor Washington scored twice in the second half as Charlton Athletic finally ended their wait for a victory at The Valley.

The Addicks had failed to win in their last eight matches in SE7 – a frustrating sequence stretching back to December.

But Charlton have taken seven points from a possible nine to move back into the League One play-off equation.

Washington broke the deadlock in the 65th minute after Northampton defender Jake Sowerby collided with Jake Forster-Caskey in the penalty area. The Addicks’ number 14 had a lengthy delay before he took his spot-kick but found the bottom right corner.

Washington was in the right place in the 84th minute to drill home after Northampton keeper Jonathan Mitchell could only push Andrew Shinnie’s shot back out. It was the Northern Ireland international’s ninth goal of the campaign.

The visitors reduced the deficit in injury time as Alex Jones outjumped Matt Smith to guide Mark Marshall’s delivery from a corner beyond Ben Amos.
