Charlton defender Chris Gunter is a role model for Wales team-mate Joe Rodon

The big-tournament experience of Charlton’s Chris Gunter is a big factor in Wales’ run to the last-16 of the European Championships, according to Spurs centre-back Joe Rodon.

Speaking from the Wales camp in Rome this afternoon, Rodon told the South London Press about the benefits of playing alongside the 31-year-old, who came into central defence for his country against a much-fancied Italian side in Rome on Sunday.

“Guntz is a big character for us,” said Rodon. “It’s important to have his leadership in the group, it’s massive for us. He is brilliant to play alongside and is one of the best I’ve played with. He doesn’t stop talking and his experience goes a long way. You want to learn off that and add it to your game as well.

“He’s a great leader for us and we all know what Guntz can do. Being available all the time, and the caps he has achieved, is a credit to him. It’s an unbelievable achievement and it’s amazing how he keeps himself in such great physique and keeps on going. He’s a role model for all of us.”
