Charlton defender felt Wycombe striker lucky to avoid red card after ‘high’ tackle

Charlton defender Kayne Ramsay felt that Richard Kone was fortunate not to be sent off in last night’s League One play-off semi-final fixture.

The Wycombe striker was only booked for a first-half challenge on Ramsay, who stayed down and needed treatment.

Replays showed it was an ugly tackle by Kone, who also tangled legs with the same player in the second period.

At one stage it looked as if the 24-year-old might be forced off – substitute Alex Mitchell being told to warm up – but the former Southampton youngster managed to stay on.

Asked about the foul by Kone, Ramsay said: “I took a touch and as he came in I felt my ankle twist. I was a bit scared. I haven’t watched it back yet.

“For sure (he felt it could have led to more than a caution) – especially how high up it was. It is what it is, we go again. I got into another tangle in the second half and that one got me.

“He apologised after the first one but the second I don’t think he knew he stepped on me.

“It was a bad tackle – high on my shin. I don’t think he meant to do it but you can’t be making that. I think it should’ve been more than a yellow.”

Charlton drew 0-0 at Adams Park and will be seen as favourites to progress in the second leg at The Valley on Thursday.

“We came here and we knew it was going to be tough, especially from beating them 4-0 a couple of weeks ago,” said Ramsay. “We knew they were going to be up for it and would want revenge. We did well to keep it 0-0 and get the clean sheet.

“When we get to The Valley our fans are going to be loud. We’re going to need every single one of them.

“We wanted to play a lot more but, credit to Wycombe, they stopped us. They were pressing us as much as we were pressing them. Both defences did well.

“I think we need to go into it (the second leg) with the same mentality, like we did today, and not go in thinking it is going to be easy. We’re going to have to put in 110 per cent – every single one of us.

“It is not going to be easy. We have to give it our all, be confident and play the way we do at home – I’m sure it will be ours.”
