Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard discusses sell-on clause in Karlan Grant’s West Brom switch

Thomas Sandgaard has spoken about the money due to Charlton Athletic as part of Karlan Grant’s move to West Bromwich Albion.

The Huddersfield Town forward joined the Baggies yesterday in a deal which has been widely reported as worth £15million.

And the Addicks are believed to have a 20 per cent sell-on in that deal on anything above the £2million the Terriers paid to pluck him from SE7 in January 2019.

Sandgaard was talking to the South London Press before Grant’s deal had been completed. West Brom have since signed the striker on a six-year contract, with suggestions that the fee will be staggered across that duration. It means that Charlton would get their money broken down into the same instalments.

“That will fill a very dry spot when I look at the financial sources for this season for the club,” said Charlton’s Danish owner. “I will be incurring massive losses because of Covid and the lack of fans going into the stadium.

“Anything obviously helps. Of course I’m prepared for it – I didn’t walk into this blindfolded. But that sort of positive news is going to be helpful, also considering the kind of investment I’m looking to make at the club.”
