Chelsea loanee set to join full training at Charlton on Monday as Johnnie Jackson wanted a ‘reset’
Juan Castillo will start full training with Charlton Athletic on Monday with manager Johnnie Jackson revealing that the Chelsea loanee had been sidelined with Covid.
The Addicks completed a loan deal for the 22-year-old left-sided defender on Friday.
But Castillo was not part of the matchday squad for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fleetwood Town.
“He’s had Covid last week,” said Jackson. “He wasn’t ill with it but there are protocols he needs to follow. He hadn’t been able to train with the group before now.
“He trained with a small group this morning [Saturday] and he’ll join the main group on Monday. Then it’s about building him up to get him involved.”
“He’s a bright young player who came through the system at Chelsea. A lot of attacking ability for that full-back, wing-back position. It will give us competition there.”
The Addicks also look set to complete a loan move for Middlesbrough’s Marcus Browne next week and have boosted their backroom staff with the appointment of Terry Skiverton as first-team coach on Monday.
Skiverton ended a 23-year association with Yeovil as a player and on their coaching team.
“We really tried to make it a reset with a couple of fresh faces coming in, a new coach coming in,” said Jackson.
“It was time to sort of take stock of what we’ve done before but really make it a reset and let’s try and finish the season strong now.
“We got a hard-earned point on the road to stop the run of defeats. Now we needed to go and back that up and we did that.”
Like many, I am mystified why Charlton had a bad run of results after the permanent appointment of Jackson as manager. Perhaps the reason is that the 3 defeats were all by the odd goal and underlined that Charlton are not the goal threat when Stockley and Washington are not available. However, some fans were saying that the away performances were below par. The defeats mean we can say goodbye to the play offs, but the players still need to make sure that Charlton are not drawn into a relegation battle. Yesterdays hard earned win was very important as Fleetwood would have overtaken us in the table had the result been reversed and hopefully put a bit of confidence back into the team, because Charlton did look a little disjointed at times, or perhaps Fleetwood did their homework. At least Charlton are not conceding many goals, but find it hard to score them. Again, not a great performance and Elliot lee was again disappointing, along with the poor distribution from Fanewa and Innis, particularly in the 1st half. Perhaps a couple of new faces will freshen things up and maybe that is needed or are this present squad not quite good enough for any promotion attempt.
