Chuks Aneke forced off in Charlton friendly – but boss Garner has positive update
Charlton Athletic manager Ben Garner has eased fears over Chuk Aneke’s withdrawal in yesterday evening’s 3-0 win over Welling United.
The striker came off in the 66th minute in the behind-closed-doors friendly at the Addicks’ Sparrows Lane training ground.
Garner told Charlton TV: “It was just a precaution – a little bit of tightness in his calf. We don’t think it is anything major at all.
“He’ll have this weekend off now and hopefully it will have settled down by next week.”
Charlton scored all three of their goals in three second-half minutes. Alex Gilbey struck twice with Diallang Jaiyesimi also on target.
“We got in and around the box in the first half and didn’t quite get the execution or decision right,” said Garner. “We were a bit more ruthless and a bit more cut-throat in the final third [after the restart]. Three really good goals and we probably should’ve had a couple more there.”
Gilbey staked his claim for starting in the League One opener at Accrington Stanley next weekend.
Garner will take charge of another Charlton team today against Swansea at The Valley as he aims to ensure his players are ready for the start of the competitive campaign.
Asked about Gilbey giving him a headache, he replied: “Exactly what we want – a strong squad and competition for places.”
