Den pitch set to be a leveller for Millwall’s Championship clashes against Birmingham and Wycombe

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has described The Den pitch as a “leveller” for tonight’s home game against Birmingham City.

The Lions have back-to-back home matches against two of the Championship’s bottom three. They follow up the visit of Rowett’s former club with an SE16 date with Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Millwall are unbeaten in six matches and won 4-1 against Sheffield Wednesday when they last played at The Den, only their second victory of the campaign there.

“The pitch is not going to be good,” said Rowett. “It wasn’t great anyway, like most team’s pitches aren’t because they haven’t had the time to do work on them in the summer [due to the Covid-19 pandemic cutting the break]. And we had to train on the pitch last week because the training ground was frozen.

“It is going to be a difficult pitch to play on. It is a little bit of a leveller. We’ve got to make sure we play in the right way, like we did against Sheffield Wednesday and the second half at Reading – really try and take the game to the opposition.

“We’re coming up against two teams who are scrapping for their lives. They will be fighting for everything. But if we want to have the same ambition to get to where we want to be, or similar to last season, we have to go and take some points in these run of games.”
